A family heirloom from my late dad, can anyone help me identify this piece, what's good and what's bad about it? Thank you

affiliated with either some political leader or militia to get his paws on some free ammo which I'm not.
That helps here too!
Why was this member Free radical banned?
Was it based on the FA weapon?

Hardly free... It's illegal to own rifled firearms here except with a special permit, civilians are only allowed to own smoothbore shotguns and bird shot, but the majority of the population here illegally keeps weapons for protection especially during the 70s to 90s, I never shot that piece, but my dad told me despite the stereotypes that AKs are inaccurate, he could hit the rim of a car tire at more than 300 meters, I'll have to check and confirm but it's very difficult to shoot such pieces here, I just cannot go to the range and shoot, I'll have to find a deserted area or have some protection or some sort of cover, and ammo is very expensive here
My guess is something in there,

^^ Yes my assumptions well., but wondering if that is the case or ? No big deal., just saw he was banned and thought to ask.
Had no idea I was banned... Was kinda busy the last couple of days and didn't check the forum tbh.

I'm the only son, but I have two sisters.

The magazines were full but I emptied them a couple of years ago to relieve the springs, but I still have the ammo, some in bulk, some in boxes, a mixture of Russian steel cased green with a red line on the bullet cannelure, Chinese copper washed, serbian, Ukrainian, Egyptian and Syrian brass etc... Reading the headstamps, some of them date back to the 60s

Concerning the stock ornament, anyone of you guys seen something like that before?
About keeping mags full of ammo, that is how the Soviets used to ship them and never had problems with the springs. It is only the loading and unloading of a mag that works the spring, so keeping the mags full is not a problem.
I am astonished by the Freak Out mode some went into before knowing the facts . For those who are unaware of laws concerning Machine Guns . Full Autos are legal in some US States so long as You have the correct License and Full Autos can also being Legally inherited by a family member also if done in the legal and correct way . Great AK you have Free radical Your a lucky man . My condolences on the lose of Your Dad . Best Regards

Can't say I have seen anything like it. See plenty of carvings and gouges in photos and such, don't think I've seen an addition like that.

Unnecessary. Springs only wear out when one of two things happen.

1) Repeated compression within its normal range of movement. IE: Each spring has a certain number of compression cycles before the metal wears out. For any gun magazine spring this will be many thousands of times.

2) Over/under compression. A spring can also be permanently damaged if it is crushed or extended beyond its normal range of motion. Same thing that happens when a slinky gets stretched out. This will not occur with normal use of a firearm magazine as they will not do this with normal use, because the people who designed these things were smart and made it like that.

Storing a magazine fully loaded will cause the exact same wear on the spring as if it was stored empty because it doesn't matter at what point of its movement a spring is stored in terms of it wearing out.

That magazine is basically top quality and it will last as long as the gun does. You'd wear out the barrel rifling before you wore out the mag.

A couple ideas. Look to historical weapons in your region - going back to flintlocks - for design embellishments like that and see if it was sort of a retro add-on. Check weapons pictures in the more rural interior areas, private security forces in the Bekaa or the mountains where the clan-defense traditions are old. Not unusual to see weapon adornments years ago, perhaps less common today.

OTOH, maybe the inspiration is a piece of French rococo furniture, that's the closest visual match I can find.

You speak like a local! Which Bekaii clan are you with???

I'm sure it's an adornment off a piece of furniture, I'm a bit surprised how the color matches and the curvature, it was an eyesore at first, wanted to remove it, but I'm getting somehow used to it.
I get it, cycling a spring will shorten its life, I've heard it before, keeping it compressed won't affect it.

On the other hand, a couple of days ago a friend gave me a rusty Soviet slab magazine missing the spring and the follower... 🤔
Agreed, keep stock the way it is.

You can look up pictures of Yugo civil war AKs and they have all kinds of what is commonly called trench art. Yours is more like an embellishment. I like it. Handling the rifle may be a bit of an issue as you may not want to damage it or get it snagged on something.

Good excuse to get you a beater AKM to shoot and keep this one nice as possible.

Is it just as hard to find accessories in your location? Maybe you could find a original style replacement stock set and keep the stock set your Dad gave you as is.

There was a store who had tacticool kits for AKs like Magpul or the likes with an AR style butt. I should check it out.
