Best 7.62×39 Ammo for AK 47.

What is the best 7.62×39 ammo for AK 47 ,and what kind of ammo are you running ? Specify defense round and range round.

Golden Tiger FMJ. Barnaul is a close second. Both produce consistent accuracy and total reliability. GT is just a bit more accurate for me though.

Range ammo? Anything will work. Buy them all. If you find one is more accurate than another but that one.

SD ammo will be like any other SD ammo. It will be something from a US commercial manufacturer. I believe Hornady is really the only one. Possibly Winchester.
Yugoslav M67 surplus ball ammo is good but not cheap anymore and corrosive, which means you have to clean as soon as possible or chance rust.
8M3 effect seems to be good. As well as Golden Tiger (GT).

Typically when people say they want the best they don't really want to pay but......some of the best all around ammo is Lapua from Finland but it's hard to find and will cost you dearly.

Golden Tiger fmj, the old Wolf Classic fmj and 8m3 hollow point (laquer coated and sealed at neck and primer), Yugo fmj (corrosive)...

I like the sealer that GT uses on the primer and projectile, probably my choice for HD/SD

I have shot various objects with it out to 50 yds....it is really nasty on exit.

M67 Yugo, Wolf, Golden Tiger, Hornady. Plenty of information is available on the internet.

Anything that your rifle eats reliably. Quality rifles rarely are picky.
Home Defense will be close range so that's almost a moot point.

Call me OCD but I like to only run brass cased Ammo. Fiocci, PMC Bronze, Red Army Standard Elite are some of my favs for the range. For defense I reload and use Hornady SST projectiles the ones with the red tip.

For the range,Wolf classic is my go to ammo,GT or Wolf Laquer for Zombies or Aliens.Home Defense,12ga with an 1&1/2 #5 shot Turkey load, but that's just me.I worry about over penetration with a rifle.

Try different ammo by brand, and see what your weapon likes. My personal favorites are M67 ball, DDR, S&B, and Golden Tiger. I like Wolff as well, but don't really see it locally, so I never buy it.

What's best is always a personal thing. I figure what works consistently is good. Right now....for me it's Tulammo 122gr FMJ because I have a bunch of magazines loaded with it. Range ammo.......armadillo killers........and defensive. While I have plenty of Silver Bear SP, and 123gr HP, some M67, and some Hornady polymer tip, GT and Wolf out the wazoo and/or all that other 'specialty' ammo................................I think whichever AK I choose at the moment with a 30 round magazine with ANY ammo that will run through it is adequate for defensive purposes. It's 7.62x39 for Pete's sake! Inside 50yds and I figure a soft point or a hollow point isn't going to do anything special that a FMJ round won't do. If the box says "hunting ammo" doesn't mean it's best for personal defense. You've got 30 rounds to make sure of the ammo performance and a spare mag or two is always good to have. Why rely on one round's performance? The cost per round doesn't introduce any magic into the equation. Your $3 round might not drop your target. What then? Keep shooting.......or choose a different round?
Maybe it's just me, but I figure ammo selection for the AK is just as simple as the AK design itself. Maybe I'm just too simple minded? Overthinking things just gives me a headache.
Keep shooting!

This weekend I stumbled on a can of Romanian x39 labeled as match and a case of S&B steel cased. Both of these are supposed to be accurate.
I'll let you know how the S&B works for me in my Polish build. A member of my range traded 342 rounds of 7.62x39 for a bunch of 30.06 brass I had. I ended up with Yugo M67, S&B, commercial Russian, and American UMC.
Brown Bear. I guess that is Barnaul, too.
RobSki's ammo test videos actually had American Eagle and Brown Bear as the most consistent.
I like this for plinking.

This for WROL.

And this for "get off my lawn."

Again, see what your rifle likes (accuracy-wise) and stock up on that. Obviously if it makes your rifle malfunction, steer clear.
good = chamber round + pull trigger = bang
bad = chamber round + pull trigger = click

Indeed!

Still blasting away with Golden Tiger.....no complaints
I have a ton of Tula which some is FMJ some is hollow point hunting rounds.
Have a bunch of GT and some Russian white box whatever that is numerically. It seems a lot hotter tho'.
Have some Czech brass cased and S&B brass cased and several spam cans of Romanian corrosive too.
I just run whatever I have on hand and don't have a favorite.

I have quite a bit of brand new Lapau. Can someone tell me how to sell it online.

I own 2 Arsenal SAM-7 and one SAM-7S rifles and the only ammo that I shoot in them is Cheetah from Vector Arms. It is brass cased and non-corrosive. I do not care for steel case ammo. I can only guess that the force required to extract the steel case from the chamber would be higher than that on the softer brass case. This would would put a higher load on the extractor claw. AK's have large, tough extractor claws, but why make put more stress on it if that can be avoided with brass case ammo?

I like doing business with Vector, anyway. It is a great company. You can save money if you but 3 cases at a time.

My 2 cents.
