AK Barrel Markings Resource?

4105 Views 21 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Ripley
While I was digging through my kits, I came across a stray barrel. I originally thought it was Bulgarian now I think its Yugoslavian because of the 3 but it has some other distinctive markings that's making me unsure. My google search for barrel markings turned up very little. Anyone know of a good cross reference for barrel markings? Or can you tell me anything about the markings in the photos?

How about an overall picture?
Yugo is sort of all by itself as far as profile and gas port location.
Here's the overall barrel and a close up of the gas port.

Yugo wouldnt be chrome lined, so thats the giant red flag you should look for first.
Ok if thats the case its not Yugo because it is chrome lined...I should pull out my kits and look at all the markings. I've always glanced at them to get country of origin but never really looked at them in any detail.
not sure what the gas port will tell us... how about showing us the '3' stamp or 'other distinct markings'?

OP: What barrel is this?
Everyone else: Pictures?
OP: Here's a picture I took of a duck and a macro shot of the gas port.

Its a 7.62x39 barrel. Pictures of the markings are in the imgur link on the first post.

I've been able to identify the barrel. It is a Yugo AB2. Thanks for the feedback.

The setback of the RSB journal is more rear set and the HGR retainer slot more forward set are signs of a Zastava barrel, the rear taper of the barrel as well.

The jourmal sizes at AK47 pattern vs AKM.

Thats interesting. This barrel is a mystery. When I bought it years ago it was sold to me as Bulgarian but something never seemed right about its dimensions so I pushed it the side for other known barrels. Its only recently that I finally decided to use it and when I went to fit it, the barrel journal was way too big for an interference fit.

These are the measurements that lead us to believe it must be a Yugo.
Barrel overall length 16.375
Barrel journal length 1.513
Barrel journal diameter .908
Rear sight journal length .941
Rear sight diameter .730
Handguard retainer journal length .690
handguard retainer journal diameter .689
Gas block journal length 1.659
gas block diameter .633
Front sight journal length 1.253
Front sight journal diameter .592
Threaded length .672
Thread diameter .543
gas port opening width .149
gas port opening length .349
gas tube length 7.75

You can place it next to a known AKM or AK47 pattern barrel and see the visual differences as described above very readily.

Or Google Robert Forbus and you will find barrel blueprints and dimension data for a dozen or so barrel types.
Thanks I'll check out Robert Forbus. I only matched measurements to a thread in this forum so I'll see how mine measures up to his.
You sure its chromed? How about a pic of the bore? Hows it fare on the bullet test?
If you set that barrel side by side with a known AKM or AK47 barrel the differences will jump right out as noted above. It is very different than any other AKM or AK47 pattern barrel.
Zastava M64/70 barrels are not chromelined

This one isn't as clear to see so you be the judge. I've seen brighter lining but its the distinct color change line that leads me to believe it is. I spent all of my 7.62x39 at the range last weekend and I have yet to pick up anymore. But the bullet test is good. The bore looks shiny too.

I'm going to use a different barrel in kit I'm building anyhow. I ordered a new kit last night with a populated barrel so it won't go into that either. Some day I'll find a use for it. I may be wrong about the chrome lining. The picture I uploaded, the "chrome" is a bit brighter than it is in person probably because of the zoom.

Oh SHIT you actually photoshopped that chrome on there? WTF... Why wouldn't you just admit its not chrome lined..

Take your smartass somewhere else. I did not photoshop anything! This would be a stupid thing to lie about especially when I've freely admitted on many posts on this site I'm wrong about a good many things. What would be the benefit? Since my post I have had a smith look at it and its not chrome lined but he was confused why it has a definite change in color as seen in the photo. The photo it is much more prominent than it is in person. I assume that's a result of the flash but I don't know. It really doesn't matter anyway because I no longer have the barrel.

Edit: Before you come back at me. I was incorrect when I said anything. I do photoshop all my photos to resize ONLY. I don't edit the image. Again that would be stupid.
