Need reference guide for identifying Russian HGs

941 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Commander Marnie
I seem to recall a link or graphic from years ago that walked through the various iterations of Russian AKM and 74 HGs. Does anybody have something like that?

Specifically I have some Russian lowers that are supposedly all from 74s but I never know how to identify them.

Here’s a pic of three versions, one has metal spring at the back. I thought though that there were earlier 74 versions without the spring? Hoping someone has a good reference I can use

thanks guys

Far left is a '74. The other 2 are AKM. AKM has the vent holes. Middle appears to be Tula, the other two Izzy. You will also find the spring on late model AKM.

That's exactly correct^

Early AK. handguards have the steel dowel positioned further forward as they did not need/plan to mill out the relief for a retention spring.

The early ones also always have a square "pocket" milled into the inside of the lower hg.
There are transitional lowers that have both the pocket and retention spring.
The late AKM internal milling pattern are the same as Ak74, just a cylindrical channel milled through without the pocket and metal insert.
Tula palmswells are rounded, izzy are squared off more.

It seems that early tula palmswells are longer than the late ones.
The tula AKM (center) one without a doubt is refinished.

The AK74 left, has unusually shallow finger groove. Its color may give it away as tula. The squared vs rounded rule doesn't seem to apply to AK74 model.

I can add example pics if needed from my collection

Here is my meaning of "pocket". As you can see, there are examples of parts where both the retention spring and the rectangular relief / pocket are present. You can see that the small metal insert is no longer part of the design at this point. The insert used to be present on AK47 and early AKM parts. This would signify that the piece im showing here is a mid production IZZY AKM part, as the palmswells are squared, the color range of the varnish, and I think there was a diamond proof /acceptance mark somewhere on here where Tula ones are circular, sometimes with "H" or "K" in them. I've also seen ones where it's just an "H"

When it comes to markings, I've seen that they are so numerous considering the ones documented on this forum, and ones that I've seen on my personal collection that have never shown up on this forum that it seems too arduous or impossible to catalog every one ever made let alone know their precise meaning, but it is generally understood that the diamond marks are acceptance marks regardless of the lettering or numbering inside.

Thanks so much for all this info. Looking forward to getting some time tonight to look at what I have and compare it to the info you have provided.

The lower on the right in my pics...will that install and work on a 74? Or is that spring at the back of a 74 HG necessary?

Thanks!
The lengths are the same. Akm and ak74 are interchangeable fit for those parts
